Picasso & Mastership

Posted on June 28, 2011

Screenwriters never really get the respect they deserve. Olson relates an anecdote about Picasso, who was approached by a guy at a party and asks Picasso to draw on a napkin and he’ll pay him. Picasso does it, hands the drawing to the man and asks for a million dollars. “What, but it took you thirty seconds to do that!” Picasso shrugs, “Well, it took me fifty years to learn to do that in thirty seconds.”

Or told a little differently:

Upon entering a restaurant, Picasso was greeted by the owner himself, who offered him free meal in exchange for a drawing. Picasso made the owner a quick sketch on a napkin, which thrilled him. At the end of the meal the owner noticed that the sketch was not signed, so he asked Picasso for his signature. To which Picasso answered: “Dear man, if I signed that drawing it’s not a meal you would have to offer me but your entire restaurant.”
